Soon after Confucius arrived in the capital of Chen state, Duke Min of Chen state invited him to climb the Lingyang tower which was about to be completed.  Many labors were put to death because of the slow progress of construction. Duke Min was also planning to execute three officials in charge of construction supervision. He asked Confucius, "Did Duke Wen of Zhou dynasty execute labors when he was building the Ling tower?" Confucius replied, "No. At that time, the labors respected Duke Wen as their father, so they worked diligently." Duke Min was ashamed after hearing this, so he released the three officials and stopped the construction.
