On March 4, Zhejiang Television’s program The Shape of Culture was taking the audience to the last station of Season III—Fenghuang Ancient City in western Hunan, allowing them to feel the great cultural charm of the city.

As one of the world’s seven wonders, the Great Wall in northern China is known around the world. What is less known, however, is the “Southern Great Wall”in southern China. The “Southern Great Wall”stretches 191 kilometers from Tingzi Pass at the border between Guizhou and Tongren in the south to the Xique military camp of Jishou in western Hunan in the north. Like the Great Wall in northern China, the Southern Great Wall is a huge ancient fortification in Chinese history.

In the program, the audience follows the local commentator to the center of the ancient city to experience the romance unique to the people of Fenghuang and enjoy the scenery along the way, from old streets and lanes to the former residence of Shen Congwen. In addition, the program also shows the Miao silver-making technique, that is, how to make a whole set of exquisite silver jewelry purely by hand without any molds. It is a technique passed down for six generations by representative inheritors of the national intangible cultural heritage item.
