More than 50 pieces of tri-colored Tang Dynasty pottery unearthed in Jinan

A press conference washeld at theArchaeology Institute of Jinan, China, on February24. From the second half of 2021 to the first half of 2022, the institutehandledmore than 200 tombs from different periods during the archaeological excavations at the Fan Family Site in Licheng District, Jinan City. Among them, more than 50 tri-coloredterra-cotta warriors, 20 porcelain pieces and a box of epitaph were unearthed from the tomb of Zhu Man in Tang Dynasty (M49), marking one of the most important discoveries during this excavation.

At the exhibition hall of theInstitute, dozens of dazzling and true-to-life tri-colored glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty, including maids, cows, sheep and mandarin ducks, were displayed.

The tomb of Zhu Man in Tang Dynasty (M49) offersthe most abundant, diversified and exquisite collection of tri-colored glazed pottery of Tang Dynasty unearthed so far in Shandong. Among the unearthed are the terra-cotta figures of Lokapala, the tomb animals, the Hu men riding horses, and the Hu men leading camels.

The discovery of Zhu Man’s tomb in Jinan can inspire the study of development pattern and dating standard of Tang Dynasty porcelain. It is of great significance for the study of demographic changes in Northern Shandong from the Northern Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty. It also provides new materials for finding the ancient location of Jinan city between the Western Jin Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty.
