Unearthed flush toilet in Shaanxi dates back 2,400 years

Recently, a high-end toilet relicwith a history of 2,400 years was found at the YueyangCity Ruins in Shaanxi, marking the only toilet unearthed at any ancient Chinese palace archaeological site and first-everflush toilet excavatedin China.

The Yueyang City Ruins is located in Yanliang District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province. The ancient relic consists of two parts, an indoor toilet on a platform and a pipe system below that directed sewage outside.

In the previous archaeological excavations at the Yueyang City Ruins, a bathroomrelicwas found in the palace remains. Together, the bathroom and flush toilet unearthed this time is a concrete proof of the enhanced awareness ofthe ancient Chinese forsanitation2,400 years ago.

Both of thetwo buildings excavated this time are south-facing palace ruinsin a rectangular shape, which arecomposed of groundwork and drainage, etc.

According to exploration and excavation data, archaeologists have discovered a north-south axis through the entire No. 3 palace building. As the earliest capital axisalready identified, the axis holds great value for studying the architectural layout of ancient Chinese capitals.
