Chinese cultural inheritance at the temple fair in Penang, Malaysia

On the evening of January 28, 2023, the Penang Temple Fair was held as scheduled in George Town, the capital of Penang State, Malaysia.

Apart fromthe most classic lion dance in China, there wasalso dragon dance, traditional songs, magic and other performances. Guzheng, flute, erhu and other musical instruments attracted a large local audience, and children were fascinatedby traditional folk customs such as paper-cutting and dough shaping.

The first temple fair in Penang was held in 1999. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic in the previous two years, the fair was still successfully held,albeit online.The Penang Temple Fair has always beenfocused onpromotingthe Chinese culture, and in recent years, prioritized cultural inheritance. It encouragespeople to visit ancestral temples to learn from the cultural valuespassed down fromtheir ancestors. It ishopedthat in this way, every overseas Chinese can have the opportunity to inherit the values, character, and vigor embedded in their genes.

Penang hasa sizable Chinese population in Malaysia. A number of Chinese arrived in Penang as early as the Qing Dynastyand made significantcontributions to the local economic and social development. These Chinese continue tocelebrate the Spring Festival and other traditional festivals today to cement interpersonal ties and preserve the fine traditional culture of the Chinese nation.
