子夏［1］问孝。子曰：“色难。有事弟子
服其劳，有酒食先生馔［2］，曾［3］是以为孝乎？”
Tsze-hsia asked what filial piety was. The
Master said, “The difficulty is with the countenance.
If, when their elders have any troublesome affairs,
the young take the toil of them, and if, when the
young have wine and food, they set them before
their elders, is THIS to be considered filial piety? ”
【注释】［1］子夏：姓卜，名商，字子夏。卫
国人（一说晋国人）。孔子的弟子。［2］馔
（zhu3n）：吃喝，食用。［3］曾（z8ng）：岂，
难道，表示反问。
【译文】子夏问什么是孝。孔子说：“对父母
长期地保持和颜悦色的态度最难。有事情，
