子游［1］问孝。子曰：“今之孝者，是谓能养。
至于犬马，皆能有养；不敬，何以别乎？”
Tsze-yu asked what filial piety was. The Master
said, “The filial piety of nowadays means the support
of one’s parents. But dogs and horses likewise are
able to do something in the way of support; without
reverence, what is there to distinguish the one
support given from the other?”
【注释】［1］子游：姓言，名偃，字子游。吴
国人。孔子的弟子。
【译文】子游问什么是孝。孔子说：“现在有
些人所认为的孝，就是能够养活父母。可是，
连狗、马等都能够做到长幼间的相互养活。
作为人，如果在养活父母的时候做不到‘敬’，
