Ancient trees are living cultural relics and a part of Chinese historical and cultural heritage. They hold significant research value in various fields, including Chinese garden history, plant evolution and variation, dendroclimatology, and dendroecology.
On November 17, the launch ceremony of the 2023 Shanxi Ancient and Famous Trees Protection Week took place at the Jinci Museum. The event explored the theme “Protecting Ancient and Famous Trees, Passing on Chinese Cultural Heritage.” The event highlights the link between protecting ancient and famous trees, conserving the heritage of the Chinese civilization, honoring the traditions of revolutionaries, and expanding green spaces. The event aims to showcase the historical and cultural significance of ancient and famous trees.
Among the 122 ancient trees listed at the Jinci Museum, 29 are millennium-old trees and they fall into 14 species. In the national promotional contest “Top 100 Most Beautiful Ancient Trees and Ancient Tree Clusters” compiled by the Office of the National Greening Committee, the ancient Thuja tree at the Jinci Museum was recognized as one of the “10 Most Beautiful Ancient Thuja Trees” in China.
