Famous Scholars Gather at Nishan Forum on World Civilizations to Discuss Global Changes and Trend of Contemporary Human Civilizations

Date:2021-09-29

On September 27, during the first high-level panel discussion of the 7th Nishan Forum on World Civilizations, Chen Lai, Dean of Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Learning and Vice President of International Confucian Association, shared views with other scholars centered on the topic of "the Common Value of Chinese Civilization and Mankind", wining unanimous agreement from participating scholars and guests.

Chen Lai said that peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy, and freedom are recognized as the common values of all mankind. The common values of peace, development, fairness and justice reflect the demands of establishing a new type of international relations. From this perspective, fairness means that all countries are equal. Democracy means that major international affairs should be discussed by all countries in the world. We oppose big, strong, and rich countries oppressing small, weak, and poor countries. The common values of mankind are to truly extend these values to all human affairs and make them truly universal values. The moral basis used to express the common value of mankind is the value principle proposed by Confucian culture, which shows that ancient Chinese ideas and concepts are closely related to the common value of mankind.

Yang Chaoming, Deputy Director of Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies said that the emotion of love is common to everyone, and it is a natural feeling. In traditional Chinese culture, love is refined as "benevolence." Humanity shares the same future, and people should learn to love and trust each other. For thousands of years, it has been China's consistent noble cause to seek harmonious international relations and pursue the common good. Yang Chaoming said: "China's benevolence knows no borders or national boundaries. After the outbreak of COVID-19, China immediately shared its own anti-epidemic experience with the world, and created the great anti-epidemic spirit."

Zhang Zhigang, Professor of Department of Philosophy and Department of Religious Studies, Peking University, said that the mainstream philosophy and religious traditions of all nations and countries in the world also value harmony and peace. "Religious dialogue can be regarded as the theoretical frontier of the international religious studies circle and has become a hot topic in the global theoretical community." Philosophical thoughts with Confucian morality at the core are the mainstream of traditional Chinese culture. Modern society is developing towards the goal of "lasting hatred must be reconciled". "Such efforts should start from me, from people around myself and from everyone. We should stop asking others to take actions first, or simply contending with others."
