Shandong revivifies traditional culture by both "conservative" and innovative efforts
Date:2021-08-26General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed that work should be done to vigorously promote and exalt fine traditional Chinese culture and encourage its creative transformation and development. In response to General Secretary Xi's call, Shandong Province has always been intensifying its efforts to tap, marshal and elucidate fine traditional cultural resources there in a bid to have such cultural resources integrated into and play a vibrant role in modern life.
Ancient literature is an important carrier of fine traditional Chinese culture. For this reason, Shandong Province has implemented a package of programs in the past several years to better protect and marshal ancient books, including "Confucius Archives" and "Integration of Chinese Ancient Books". Amongst others, the "Integration of Chinese Ancient Books" has been rated as a national key cultural program. So far, this program has been rewarded with phased achievements. Specifically, thanks to cooperative efforts with colleges and universities and book collection institutions at home and abroad, a total of 1,110 overseas libraries have been investigated and 598 kinds of rare Chinese books brought back to China.
Zheng Jiewen, chair professor at Shandong University and chief expert of this program, told our reporter, "We figure a lacuna of about 10,000 kinds of ancient books and other literature in our Chinese mainland. Our main task is to bring these books and literature back through comparison, and put into place a holonomic system of Chinese classical books and literature. In this way, we can get prepared a solid data foundation to inherit our fine traditional Chinese culture."
For the purpose of better inheritance and development on a well-supported factual basis, Shandong is speeding up the construction of a fine traditional culture inheritance and development demonstration zone and has opened to the public successively Confucius Museum and the World Confucian Literature Collection Center. Besides, Shandong has actively put into service an exchange platform to introduce from outside and train inside top-notch talents and provide a clear perspective for studying fine traditional culture headed by Confucianism. In addition to actions to putting into place an academic research highland, Shandong, basing itself on a wealth of traditional cultural resources, has made persistent efforts to seek for significant themes, create fine stage art works and tell China's stories well.
The new drama Confucius, directed by Zhang Jigang, a famous director, and created by Shandong Provincial Drama Theatre, comes onto the stage after five times of changing its play in three years. With a fresh new stage expression means, it presents Confucius's enduring great thought beyond the time.
Dong Xuan, President of Shandong Provincial Drama Theatre, said "Confucius is a treasure for both China and the world. We hope that his artistic image on the stage will advance with the times and the world."
From profound academic researches to engaging the masses in, Shandong has transformed and developed achievements through creative and innovative efforts. As a result, legacies from Confucius have been put on stage and promoted in the life of the masses. This year, 20 museums in Shandong Province have worked together as an alliance and made fine culture and cultural relics resources come alive through ip authorization and customized intelligent platforms. Thanks to the efforts of the alliance, a variety of cultural and creative products have been available to the masses and new growth drivers boosting the cultural industry gradually accumulated.
Though the preparatory work for the exhibition Ming Epitome of Chinese Costume Culture launched by Shandong Museum and Confucius Museum is still ongoing now, 60-plus cultural and creative works for exhibition have been made available to the public. "Wenqumiao is dressed with a Chiluo court dress of Yanshenggong (a hereditary title for the descendants of Confucius) of the Ming Dynasty and wears a Wuliangguan on his head. Wuliangguan is a national first-grade cultural relic, and comes with an allusion that Confucius helps a cat to catch a mouse with playing Chinese zither. Our work in exhibitions now with other sectors is to give priority to cultural and creative industries, and get cultural relics and cultural resources integrated in our daily life in a variety of adapted means," Lu Zhaohui, Deputy Director Shandong Museum introduced to our reporter.
By now, Shandong has put into use several multi-field and diversified cultural inheritance, popularization and communication carriers. With the aid of these carriers, cultural experience and performance activities, including those organized by Nishan Academy and Lectures on Confucianism, have been held covering a wide range. Thanks to these efforts, traditional culture is becoming increasingly popular in campuses and rural communities, making itself rejuvenated again.
In addition to these efforts, Shandong has also strengthened cultural confidence, promoted the Chinese culture to "go out", made such high-end global summits better-known as Nishan Forum on World Civilizations and International Confucius Cultural Festival and reinforced the construction of overseas cultural fronts in an effort to continuously better transmit the culture of Shandong and make it more globally influential.
