In the 20th year of the reign of Duke Xiang of Lu state (553 BC), Shuliang He (Shuliang was his courtesy name; his original name was Kong He) met and fell in love with a lady named Yan Zhengzai in an idolatrous procession on Mount Ni. Before long, Yan Zhengzai was pregnant. The next year, according to the custom at that time, the two of them went to Mount Ni to pray. Yan Zhengzai gave birth to a boy in a cave, which is Confucius. Confucius was born with a bump in the middle of his head which looked like a hill (in Chinese, it is pronounced as Qiu), so his was named Kong Qiu, with the courtesy name Zhongni.
Note: Modern scholars confirm that Confucius was born on August 27th, 552 BC of Chinese lunar calendar.
