Wu Opera from Zhejiang, China Enchants Kenyan Audience

On the evening of September 5, a special Wu Opera performance was staged in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, to mark the 60thanniversary of the establishmentof diplomatic ties between China and Kenya.
Wu Opera, commonly known as "Jinhua Opera," is one of the local opera genres in Zhejiang, China. In 2008, it was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage.
The performance team from Zhejiang Wu Opera Art Research Institute, led by Chen Meilan, presented the full-length play Sun Wukong Fights the White Bone Demon, as well as
excerpts from plays such as Three Forked Road, Carrying the Bridal Sedan Chair, LyuBu Testing the Horse, and a suona solo performance titled Harvesting the Jujube Fruit. These programs were met with warm applause and cheers from the audience.
The performance was organized by the International Exchange and Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Kenya, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and the Jinhua Municipal People's Government. It is reported that the Wu Opera team will also visit Ethiopia and Eritrea for performances.
